Middle School Coordinator (Part time, 10 hrs/week)

Job Description – First Church
 
The First United Methodist Church in Lawrence includes two campuses and has a membership of 1,500 people. The Youth Program is made up of a Middle School UMYF (United Methodist Youth Fellowship) and a High School UMYF that meets at the same time, but separately unless a special event or youth worship is scheduled. It also includes an afterschool art program called the Art Café that provides a fun and safe space for middle school students to be creative. Both programs meet at the downtown campus, where there is a fun vibe and lots of space. We are looking for a Middle School Coordinator to lead activities for youth in grades 6-8.
Responsibilities:
  • Safe Gatherings certified (must be obtained before working with youth).
  • Work with Director of Youth Ministries (DYM) to research and create programming for youth in middle school and high school with a focus on grades 6-8.
  • Assist in Sunday night youth group, leading some activities, providing support in others.
  • Attend retreats and lock-ins.
  • Be visible and available at one campus (alternating with DYM) on Sunday mornings, leading Middle School Sunday School when needed.
  • Help recruit and provide curriculum for Middle School Sunday School teachers.
  • Work 6-8 hours each week in the youth ministries office helping with office activities that promote youth programs.
  • Help create, design, and send out promotional material for youth events.
  • Communicate with parents of Middle Schoolers about upcoming events, recruiting help and sending out forms as needed.
Personal Qualities/Experience:
  • Has a strong desire to grow in their faith and ability to share their faith with others.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Hard-working, but loves to have fun.
  • Ability to identify, recruit and train positive role models for teenagers in your care.
  • Experience working with teenagers and ability to draw healthy boundaries.
  • Volunteer or other experience in church setting.
